How to encourage speech and language in children with autism
Useful information that has helped one to bridge the gap between a child without the ability to "process" language to one who is considered "ledgable"- asking for ones needs as well as answering and responding to conversation. What has worked for you/what has appeared to be a wasted effort.
Will hearing problems affect speech and language development?

Best university for Speech and Language therapy
I'm looking for the best university to attend for Speech and language therapy. Although I can find reports on the best Uni's (Times etc) these don't seem to break down to show individual subjects. What Uni has the best results for my chosen subject?
Trouble speaking...
My friends have a 3 year old daughter and a one year old son. The girl mumbles words that no one can understand. What ever they tell her to do she understands every thing you say but she can't say any words correctly. The parents have no other problems with her, she is potty trained already, her mother said that it was so easy she almost potty trained herself. Is this normal being three years old and not talking? Shouldn't a child at this age be able to speak many words very clearly? Her little brother tries to talk and no one can make out what he's saying but this is expected because he's only a year old. Sometimes I think she is jealous of him because before he came along she had gotten all the attention and now everything is him, she seems to always look angry. Please, any advice and comments are appreciated.
I have my sons review coming up in 2 weeks time and I am so nervous...
For those that don't know what I have been going through with my son over the last few years I will try and fill you in briefly. He has always struggled at school, infact it started at nursery when he couldn't cope emotionally and socially. Once at school it was noticed and he had an assessment, though nothing happened. He struggled through without much support. Once he was in his third year at school, they decided to ask me to get him help via a doctor for a re-assessment. We went to see CAMSS first, and the lady we saw after an assessment asked if I had considered the condition ASD (autism). I had never really heard about this condition, but I went home and researched it. My son fit into the spectrum, infact it explained almost everything. So I asked my doctor for a referral for an assessment for ASD. We saw a phychiatrist. Infact we have seen the same child phyciatrist 4 times now and still no proper diognoses. But we had a full assessment done by a speech and language therapist about 5 months ago. This is the reason for the review. We have had to wait 5 months for an appointment after the assessment, to find out how it went. This will be the last appointment. If he...
Which is better, occupational or physio therapy? I need some advice
My son saw his speech and language therapist the other day for an assessment of his needs. She has told me he would benefit from having an assessment done by an occupational therapist and I should go to my GP and ask to be referred.Anyway I took him to his club the other day and was speaking with one of the Mums who's child has ASD and she told me she was told the same thing and was on the waiting list to see a occupational therapist for 4 years before being taken off the list and she never actually got to see one. So she reccomended I ask to be referred to a physiotherapist instead as that is what she did. She told me they have specialist physiotherapists that work with children to strengthen their muscles and improve their fine motor skills. Now I am not sure what to do. Will a physio assess my son in the same way? Whats the difference? Does it really matter?Have any of you had to go to either with your child or yourself? I could really use some advice before I see my doctor
New Language? Or misspelling constantly?
Um, so apparently "spelt" isn't a word, as I finish typing the word, that little red squiggly line shows up underneath it, indicating it's an incorrect word. Or misspelling...That's a word though, correctly spelled out, misspelling. Any words you can think of that always appears as the incorrect spelling, but you use frequently in your everyday speech and language?
money from home - yourmailmate.com??- legit?
Well, as I mentioned awhile ago - was going to try and see about getting some extra dosh at home, so that we could pay off some bills, and save up to get the farm we need and the equipment to get our business actually moving. I signed up for yourmailmate.com, and it did seem genuine, correspondence was exchanged back and forth, any questions I had was answered. I was given an assignment - today August 4th and I would be given my log in info the night before. I checked in weekly in case there was some extra work here and there in the meantime. I got responses till about 3 weeks ago. Their website is still up. But at the moment its 10 am in the morning I was supposed to start at 9am. I have not received any log in stuff, etc. So I hate to think - as they really did seem legit, that it may possibly be a scam? I at one stage before I was given the assignment, offered to work for a lower rate, just so that I could have a steady pay cheque at home, so that I would be able to take kids to physio and ot, and speech and language as well as drive them to school. I'm a bit disappointed, but I will wait and see for a little while longer, but all I can say - yourmailmate.com, approach with...
What Causes Stuttering?
What Causes Stuttering? Experts think that a variety of factors contribute to stuttering, including:Genetics: About 60% of those who stutter have a close family member who stutters. Other speech and language problems or developmental delays. Differences in the brain's processing of language: People who stutter process language in different areas of the brain. And there's a problem with the way the brain's messages interact with the muscles and body parts needed for speaking.
