myLot Discussions| language arts class is so hard! | | I am having lots of trouble in my Language Arts class in college. I recently took a quiz on a book, where our teacher gave us quotes and we had to say the meaning of the quote and who said them in the story. I got a 56% while most other people got around 90-100%. I studied really hard, read the book twice and I don't know why I did so bad! Any tips of what to do in teh future?

| | When did art become part of Language Arts? | | I know the schools are trying to encourage classes to share ideas and to reinforce information from other classes but why are students expected to be artists to pass an English Class? My niece has to do a book report. She has to draw 8 comic panels for different sections of the book including an alternate ending and then put a sentence under each explaining them. She not only has to draw but also color them. All this is to be done on a piece of construction paper 11 x 17 (which they don't sell around here, they sell 12 x 18 or normal paper size) that is to be divided into 8 squares. Then on the back she is to write a 3 paragraph summery. Now this is just for this month's book. She has to do a book a month, each book has to have at least 200 pages. Some of the other projects have been a scrapbook, a newspaper, a mobile, to just name a few. This is a lot of art work if you ask me for an English class. I don't even want to see what next months will be.Do other schools have this much art work required in the English classes or is it just something in my area? What do you think about this? Should students be graded for art work in an English Class? | |
| | Teacher's Certification Exam - Language Arts | | I have heard that teaching certification exams are quite tricky. For example, you might get a question regarding something that you cannot remember from school days or college. What are the best tools that I can use or things to do that you recommend me to study for the Language Arts section of this test? | |
| | | What was your favorite subject at school? | | Each one of us have different fascinations for things we come across in life. Even when we were at school, we had different affinities for different subjects. All along during my high school years, I was so fascinated with "Geography". So interesting to learn about countries around the world, amazing places, cultures, people, natural resources, climatic conditions, and so on. In fact, it is that affinity that makes me interested in travelling to countries around the world today.
How about you? What was your favorite subject at school?
| | Who was your favorite teacher in all of your school years? | | My 6th grade teacher was my favorite teacher ever...she was always so nice & so patienr with me & everyone else & had the nicest personality out of all the teachers I have ever had...we stayed in contact for a couple of year after that, but then she moved away & began teaching somewhere else...I really miss her, but have had no success in finding out where she is or being able to contact her... | |
| | Do you know what a palindrome is? | | I found it fun, as a young person to ponder palindromes. A friend pointed out just now that my count at that moment was a palindrome, but it will not stay that way. A palindrome is something that reads the same both backward and forward. It can be a number or a word, or a phrase. Two that come to mind are "Madam, I'm Adam" (punchline for the old riddle, what did the first man say to the first woman?) and "Desserts is just stressed spelled backwards." Honestly, that is how I finally could keep the spelling of desert and dessert sorted out. So, did you know what a palindrome is? Do you know any palindromes? | |
| | | If you don't ask, you don't get... | | My son Cary has autism. He has problems with language. In school somebody helps him whenever they do "language arts" (what we used to call English, I guess). Well here we are in second grade and suddenly a lot of the math involvesword problems. So we were talking with his teacher and we said we though because he has problems with language, and because there were so many word problems, that we wanted to ask for additional help with that too. That got a very positive reception from the teacher so we are going to ask for that on his next IEP. Anything to make him more successful in school. But if we hadn't opened our mouths, would they have offered it? Heck no, probably not. Sometimes it's all about money, I think. And those parents who have no idea what to ask for, well their kids aren't necessarily getting the best education that they could be getting. | |
